OpenAI’s Jony Ive “io” Hardware Deal Survives Trademark Scrub, $6.5B Acquisition Remains

OpenAI has removed all public references to “io,” the AI hardware startup by ex-Apple designer Jony Ive, amid a trademark dispute with hearing-tech firm iyO. Despite the rebranding, the $6.5 billion acquisition and its planned AI device roadmap are unchanged. The collaboration, which integrates Ive’s creative vision and OpenAI’s engineering, continues development toward a 2026–2027 launch of a screen-free, context-aware “third core” gadget.
